Capture the Magic
The Benromach Spirit of Speyside Photographic Competition 2009 - Awards
The Photographic Competition finals were judged on 15 January 2009 by a panel of 5 judges headed by Chief Judge Alan Gawthorpe, President of the Scottish Photographic Federation. There were over 90 entries for the competition from an International field. 3 winning photographs were selected with 2 runners-up. The judges also selected a total of 18 photographs, which together with the winner and runner-up from the 2007 Competition and 2 iconic pictures by Heather Urquhart ARPS will comprise a travelling exhibition. The exhibition was on display at the Scottish Parliament for the judging of the Speyside Whisky Awards on 29 January 2009 and will be on display in the Balvenie Maltings for the Opening Dinner on 1 May 2009.
The winning photograph titled "Storm over the Barley" was taken David Langan of Lossiemouth. A relative newcomer to photography, David explained that he was trying to take pictures of Duffus Castle in the rain when he was inspired to take the winning photograph.
Winner in the Landscape Category was festival stalwart and previous winner Allan Adam with his photograph "Transient light at Auchindoun", Glen Fiddich's iconic Castle. Allan was also the runner up in the Spirit section of the competition with Glenlivet" a delightful image of an imbiber amongst the heather.
Winner in the Spirit Category was Jonathan Basan of Drummuir with his image Casks and Bird, an image of the much-photographed stacks of whisky casks to the rear of the Speyside Cooperage. John Davidson of Burghead was the other runner-up in the landscape category of the competition with his image Twilight on Burghead Beach.
The exhibition will remain on Speyside until mid June in both the Aberlour Library (5 to 13 May 09) Elgin Linbrary (14 May to early June 09), the Benromach Distillery for "Forres week" in June before moving to the Royal Highland Show in Edinburgh in mid June.
