Glenlivet Foraging Walk with Zeki Basan - NEWBack to events listing
- 5 May
- The Glenlivet Distillery
Young adventurer Zeki Başan will lead you on a fascinating walk in the vicinity of The Glenlivet Distillery to reveal plants and trees which our predecessors used to survive within a landscape which can at times be hostile and which, until relatively recently, was remote and inaccessible.
Passionate about inspiring other people and raising awareness about the importance of outdoor education, conserving wild places, and holding on to traditional wilderness living skills, Zeki leads outdoor activities and gives talks. He has made films of his adventures in Africa, North America and elsewhere. “Zeki is a great example of inspiration and leadership, he is wise beyond his years and deserves to be recognized and celebrated as an outstanding member of our community.” Gavin Morgan, Duke of Edinburgh Award Leader.
Zeki says, “I am passionate about wild places and conserving them. I am also passionate about learning the practical wilderness living skills of indigenous peoples with a view to increasing my knowledge and understanding of the natural world. By making films of my solo adventures I hope to share my passion with others.”
Although only aged 18, Zeki has already won an impressive number of awards and accolades including the Cairngorm National Park Award for Young Adventurous Learner of the Year 2014, the John Muir Conserver Award, 2016 and Young Scot Award 2017 for the Environment.
He will talk about foraging food and the many ways plants, fungi and tree bark were used. This will include natural fire lighting and how people used to carry embers.
