Mortlach History and Whisky Walk

  • 4 May
  • £89.00
  • Highland Spirit Bed and Breakfast
  • Dufftown

Arrive at Highland Spirit, Dufftown, for a welcoming dram of the new release Mortlach 18YO.  You will hear the history of Mortlach distillery and how we arrived at this fantastic dram from as long back as 1823.  And how it paid for health care.

See the smuggling equipment made by the local coppersmith for the distillery workers.  Then a short walk to Mortlach to see where the Celtic Monks first distilled in 566AD, their we visit Kirk, grave-robbers watchers hut, and hear about the legendary battle in the 11th Century.

What was dramming?  How did the Pagoda come about?  Why has Dufftown got the clock that hung McPherson?  Music and whisky and much more.

We will stop at the historic kiln of Mortlach Distillery and run through the odd 2.81 distillation process whilst sipping on a fine dram of 21YO Mortlach.  Passing by an old temperance hotel we will return to Highland Spirit for a beautiful 1976 dram of Mortlach.

You will hear about the role of the Mortlach Exciseman and will have a go using some of his original instruments to measure the strength/volume of alcohol.   You can try this for yourself and enjoy the discontinued but much appreciated 16 Year Old Flora and Fauna.

Lots more besides.

The easy and relaxing walk is led by Alistair a qualified Walking Guide Leader. It is about 1.25 miles and lasts about 2.5 hours and has 5 good, fine, full drams from the Beast of Dufftown.
