Set off for ‘off road' trip along the whisky trails in an unstoppable 8-wheel drive Argocat on a 2-hour tour of the Glenlivet Hills and the Robbie McPherson Smuggler's Trail. The round trip includes a visit to the site of the original Glenlivet Distillery c.1824 - the first licensed distillery in this part of Scotland and a dram of The Glenlivet.

Warm clothing and stout footwear advised. Binoculars and a spotting scope supplied. Drams of The Glenlivet and whisky cake included.

Meet at the entrance to the Malt BARN, The Glenlivet Distillery for transport by Land Rover to the start of the trail.

The hidden glen of Glenlivet was a haven for illicit whisky smugglers and distillers throughout the 18th and 19th centuries. The most infamous of these was Robbie McPherson who was based at Folds of Corriehabbie in neighbouring Glenrinnes.

Comfortably seated in two eight-wheel drive Argocats, which each seat 5 passengers, you will travel to the Peat Reek Bothy to view a reproduction Pot Still, other Highland artefacts and a copy of Robbie McPherson’s last will and testament. You will then follow the Robbie McPherson Whisky Smugglers Trail to the summit of Carn Ghrantaich giving you a 360-degree panoramic view of an area where numerous illicit stills were sited years ago. On the descent over Blairfindy Moor you will pass the site of the original Glenlivet Distillery, the first licensed distillery in the area, founded by George Smith in 1824.

These tours have been specially organised for the Festival by The Glenlivet Distillery in conjunction with Glenlivet Hill Trek, a specialist touring company operating from a base in the foot hills of the Cairngorm Mountains at Blairfindy, Glenlivet, within the Cairngorms National Park. They provide a unique and personal service with enjoyable Highland Hilltop and Whisky Smuggling experiences among the heather hilltops of the beautiful Glenlivet Estate from the comfort and safety of an Argocat 8-wheel drive vehicle.

This event is part of our Meet THE Makers Open Day at The Glenlivet Distillery with events all day in and around the Malt Barn.
