Whisky Smugglers and the Forbidden CollegeBack to events listing
- 4 May
- Glenlivet Wildlife
Leaving Dufftown we drive to Glenlivet and pass through the narrow gap guarded by the Bochel to enter the Braes of Glenlivet. This remote glen was reputed to have over two hundred illegal stills during the height of the whisky smuggling era.
As we explore off road trails we discover how distillers and smugglers lived off the land in remote hillside bothies two hundred years ago. This remote glen is home to deer, mountain hare, grouse and many other wild animals and plants. These were essential to the survival of the forefathers of modern whisky production.
Moving to the western end of the glen we discover where Roman Catholic priests were trained in secret at Scalan during the eighteenth century. Finally we explore the beginning of the whisky road to Perth before returning to Dufftown.
Join us for an unforgettable back country tour of the Braes of Glenlivet.
Sample a dram produced in this remote glen by the successors of those old time entrepreneurs.
Tour starts and finishes at the Clock Tower in the centre of Dufftown.
