Elgin
Elgin is the county town of Moray and has a long and fascinating history reflected in its buildings and monuments. By the thirteenth century it was a thriving town with a castle atop Lady Hill to the west, and the great Cathedral to the east.
Today the main street widens to the old cobbled market place known as the Plainstones This market place is linked to parallel streets by a series of narrow wynds and pends. Several buildings still retain the arched facades which were typical of the early eighteenth century. Visitor attractions of particular note include the Glen Moray Distillery, Gordon & Macphail and Johnstons of Elgin Cashmere Centre.
Spey Bay is only a short distance away with regular excursions to see dolphins, whales and other marine wildlife. Before moving on don’t forget the Longmorn and Benriach Distilleries just south of Elgin.
